Leadership Changes At Rockford
John Wheeler has stepped aside as chairman of Rockford Companies and is being replaced by Michael VanGessel, his close friend since childhood and longtime partner and co-founder of the construction and development firm.
"The time is right. Mike and I have been working for nearly 10 years to build a strong team and an ownership strategy and structure that would plan for growth well beyond the initial founders," said Wheeler in a statement.
"This move will allow me to do some personal and professional things you just don't have time to do when you are part of a company everyday. I look forward to continuing many of the community and philanthropic projects I am engaged in, and who knows what new opportunities are on the horizon," he added.
The company bought Wheeler's stock shares, a program that has been part of the succession plan the firm created in 1999. Rockford Companies is now owned by 15 individuals.
Kurt Hassberger remains company COO and Julie Towner stays on as CFO. Mike Maier continues as president of the Rockford Development Group.
"Our efforts have been focused on building a strong leadership team and becoming a major partner with our clients in retail, health care, education and urban development," said VanGessel, who also remains CEO of Rockford Companies and becomes the majority shareholder.
"Recently, Rockford took the next step in diversifying by developing a partnership with Spain-based Bergé, which allows the company to be a one-stop source for wind-farm construction and comprehensive logistical services," said VanGessel.
VanGessel and Wheeler started the company in 1987. Remodeling a private cottage was the first job they did together.
The Economic Club of Grand Rapids awarded its 2009 Business Person of the Year Award to Wheeler at its annual meeting last week.
