Mayor George Heartwell suggested that evolving partnership ventures could lead to governmental consolidation. One possibility would be the six largest cities in the county - Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Wyoming, Walker, Grandville and East Grand Rapids - uniting under one municipal umbrella. Another idea would unite the cities, townships and Kent County under a larger public umbrella, which would make the new entity the 23rd largest city in the nation. Making the area one municipality:
Is a good idea.

Won't happen due to long-standing territorial traditions.
