Grand Rapids city commissioners have put a request for a two-tenths of a percent income tax increase on the May 4 ballot that would raise about $7 million annually for the city beginning July 1. The rate for residents would rise from 1.3 percent to 1.5 percent, and from .065 percent to .075 percent for nonresidents who work in the city. The request is for five years. The additional dollars would go to public safety and park maintenance, but wouldn't cure what ails the city. The increase:
