ADA — When Dick DeVos returned to Amway Corp. in December 1992, it was because of his father Rich's failing health.

Now, a decade later, DeVos is leaving the helm of that company, now called Alticor Inc., but he believes the corporation's fiscal health is much better than it was just a few years ago.

Thursday, Aug. 31, will end the last summer DeVos is to spend as president of the giant manufacturer and distributor that has its fingers wrapped around the globe.

DeVos announced his retirement Wednesday, April 17, after informing board members at Alticor's quarterly meeting the day before. Chairman Steve Van Andel said he tried to get DeVos to change his mind, but DeVos was resolute. The firm still is setting sales and profit records, but DeVos believes now is the time to hand over leadership to someone else.
