ALLEGAN — The National Sanitary Foundation (NSF) International recently awarded its very first Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) registration to the Perrigo Company.

Perrigo earned the valuable manufacturing stamp of approval for its vitamin and nutritional supplement facility in Greenville, S. C., from NSF earlier this month.

“We are pleased Perrigo chose the NSF GMP registration process to demonstrate their continuing commitment to quality and to ensuring consumer satisfaction with the products they produce,” said Ray Jaglowski, NSF vice president of new business development.

Headquartered in Allegan, Perrigo is the nation’s leading manufacturer of store brand over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, vitamins and nutritional supplements.

NSF is the world’s leader in developing standards, certifying products, and managing risk services for public health and safety. Perrigo attained its GMP registration through the NSF Dietary Supplements Certification Program.

“The NSF GMP registration validates that our dietary supplement facility operates to the highest standard of performance,” said Michael Bradley, director of nutritional scientific affairs for Perrigo.

“This independent, third-party verification of our process controls will give our customers the confidence that Perrigo of South Carolina is prepared for the publication of the FDA dietary supplement GMPs later this year,” he added.

The dietary supplement program allows contract manufacturers to become independently registered by NSF as following the requirements of good manufacturing.

The GMPs are guidelines that assure a produced product has the identity, composition, strength, quality and purity listed on the label.

NSF conducted an audit at Perrigo’s Greenville plant to verify the company’s compliance with GMPs, and Perrigo will face periodic audits from NSF to maintain its registration.

“Being the first company to earn this registration, we believe, is evidence of our continued commitment to setting the standard for quality in the industry,” said Bradley.

“Perrigo’s nutritional business has followed the same high standards of quality as our over-the-counter pharmaceutical business, which is regulated by the FDA. We are pleased to be finally recognized for those quality standards,” added Bradley.

NSF was founded in 1944 and focuses on public health issues regarding water, food, air and the environment.

Its staff includes engineers, chemists, toxicologists, microbiologists and environmental professionals.

Besides providing certifications and setting standards, NSF also does ISO registrations and toxicology consulting.

NSF is based in Ann Arbor, calls itself the Public Health and Safety Company, and has clients in 83 countries.

“We are pleased that Perrigo has earned the NSF GMP registration,” said Kathleen Pompliano, NSF business development manager. “This program represents an important step toward ensuring product quality and consumer safety.”
