Ramp Gets Short Reprieve
GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Center parking ramp has received a two-week reprieve. Set to be demolished as part of the of the $219.5 million expansion of the convention center, the ramp was initially to have been permanently closed next Monday, April 9.
But Erhardt-Hunt, the expansion’s project manager, told the city the closing date can be pushed back to Monday, April 23. So parkers will have two more weeks to use the ramp at 245 Monroe NW.
“Our understanding is our last day of operation will be Sunday, April 22, and then come Monday morning, April 23, there will be no access to the ramp,” said Parking Services Director Ted Perez.
The Parking Commission was told that the ramp would close on April 9 at its last meeting. The closing date was changed after that meeting when the start of the ramp’s demolition was delayed to allow a few more events to be held at the Grand Center. The tearing down of the ramp is now scheduled to begin on April 30.
