Hospital Is People Friendly Award Winner
HOLLAND — In a labor-intensive business like health care, investing in “human capital” isn’t just another way of doing business. It’s the only way.
At Holland Community Hospital, benefits such as flex time, subsidized emergency child care and paid maternity leave come with the job. The goal is to help employees better manage the pressures of work and family life, President and Chief Executive Officer Judy Newham said.
“There is some interplay of partnership. It’s also just a matter of what you believe in your business,” Newham said. “From my mind, you don’t drop who your are at your front door. To me, it’s a totally seamless thing.”
That workplace philosophy earned Holland Community Hospital the annual People-Friendly Work Place Award last week from the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber created the award in 1999 to recognize employers that offer benefits and adopt policies and practices that are designed to help their employees better balance work and home life. Past winners include Johnson Controls Inc. in Holland and Progressive AE of Grand Rapids.
“We feel it’s important for people to take care of their workplace as well as the communities they’re in,” said Bruce Mammen of The Mammen Group, vice chairman of the chamber’s Healthy Workforce Committee that presents the award annually.
Holland Community Hospital also provides employees a myriad of professional development and personal wellness programs, flex time and compressed work weeks, subsidized transportation to and from work for employees in need, financial aid for employees to offset the cost of adopting a child, and separate facilities for new moms on staff who nurse their children.
Nearly 50 percent of all employees take advantage of flex-time benefits.
The result of such “people-friendly” practices has been a reduced turnover among staff.
“It’s always nice to see the efforts of the people who make this happen get recognized,” Newham said in accepting the award.
