GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids Community College, Leslie E. Tassell M-TEC Center, which opened Wednesday, is a compilation of work and numerous ideas from educators, industry leaders and architects.

The M-TEC embraces three labs, including the Construction Trades Lab, which will give students a taste of what the job is really like.

Students have the chance to work all the way through the construction process and learn trades from masonry to plumbing and pipefitting. The automotive lab is a combination of three earlier labs and contains 23 works bays with lifts plus classrooms, faculty and staff offices and an engine lab.

GM & Chrysler also will use the facility to train existing mechanics.

As the lead donor and namesake of the M-TEC, Leslie Tassell thanked the community and college for its support and acknowledged the importance and necessity of the center.

GRCC President Juan Olivarez stressed the impact the M-TEC will have on educational programs and community partnerships.
