GRAND RAPIDS — Neighborhood businesses will be honored for the 13th consecutive year by the Neighborhood Business Alliance at its annual awards ceremony that will take place Thursday evening on the Pew Campus of Grand Valley State University.

"The awards celebrate investment and excellence in Grand Rapids' 20 neighborhood business districts. It's an opportunity for our businesses to come together to celebrate the accomplishments of the neighborhood businesses," said Sharon Evoy, executive director of the Neighborhood Business Specialist Program.

Mayor John Logie and city commissioners will present the various awards to the winners. For the second straight year, the Alliance will hand out the Gerald R. Helmholdt Grand Prize to the business that exemplifies the best in business revitalization and community development efforts.

Last year, the award named after the late mayor who also was a respected business owner went to the Swift Printing Co. for the renovation of its buildings on Bridge Street NW and its creation of upper-floor apartments for disabled adults.

The event, which is free and open to the public, starts at 5:30 p.m. with the awards ceremony getting underway at 6:30. For more information, call Evoy at 771-0314.
