GRAND RAPIDS — The John Ball Zoological Society has hired Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects of Seattle to determine whether the Grand Rapids Golf Club property on Leonard Street NE would be a suitable site for a new zoo.

Jones & Jones has done design work for zoos in San Diego, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Detroit and San Antonio, and for Busch Gardens. In addition to determining whether the site will work, the firm will develop a cost estimate for building the zoo there and what its potential revenue will be.

Working with Jones & Jones on the project will be Economic Research Associates. The firm’s Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles offices will look at the marketing possibilities of a zoo on that property and prepare an attendance forecast.

Fred Meijer bought the golf course earlier this fall and has offered the land to Kent County as a potential site for a new John Ball Zoo. The golf course is adjacent to the Meijer Botanical Gardens.
