Logo In But Messiah Not
Board members decided to table their decision on an appeal from Calvin College to allow the school’s Oratorio Society to perform Handel’s “Messiah” on a Friday night in December at the city’s performing arts center. Members urged Calvin officials to work out a compromise with the Grand Rapids Ballet Company on who will use the date before the board meets next month.
The CAA Operations Committee ruled in December that the board’s booking policy gives the building’s four arts tenants, including the Ballet, priority in choosing dates and gave the date to the dance company. SMG general manager Rich MacKeigan, who oversees the daily operations of the hall, also said that the Ballet had the first right to the date.
“If we amend the policy, we’ll have to do it again. Somebody will come to us and say, ‘You did it for them, so why not us?’” said board member Birgit Klohs.
The Ballet has asked for another Friday for its Nutcracker performance. Calvin College was offered a Wednesday-Thursday date package in December, but said it needed Thursday and Friday performances to keep the society economically viable.
Board members, however, showed no hesitation in approving a logo for the new $216.4 million DeVos Place. The logo was designed by Hanon McKendry and was recommended to the board by the Operations Committee and a steering committee put together to create an identity for the convention center.
The logo features “DeVos” in a subtle orange with “Place” in a very dark green that takes on an appearance of black. A gray streak runs through both words. The next step is to register the logo and develop a policy on how it will be used. The logo cost the board about $7,500.
