GRAND RAPIDS — Davenport University will host its 6th annual Excellence in Business Dinner on Monday, May 5, honoring John Spoelhof.

Each year an individual who exemplifies the university motto, “Make a Living, Make a Life, Make a Contribution,” through outstanding business success and the willingness to give back to the community, is presented the Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award.

Spoelhof currently serves as the chairman of the investment group Bayside Capital Management and is the retired president of Prince Corp., where he worked from 1969 until his retirement in 1999. His acts of civic, charitable and corporate involvement throughout West Michigan are well documented.

The keynote speaker for the event will be Al Roker, meteorologist and co-host of NBC’s The Today Show. Roker is a nine-time Emmy winner who also conducts celebrity interviews, gives technology updates and has developed a continuing series for Today called “Today’s Dad,” which features tips for fathers.

All net proceeds of this black-tie event will be used to provide scholarships to Davenport students. As a private, nonprofit institution, Davenport University does not receive direct state appropriations and relies on its own resources to fund the projects that enhance the lives and experiences of its students.

The Excellence in Business Dinner has raised more that $500,000 to provide tuition assistance for students.

Tickets are available by calling Stephanie Hehl, director of development operations for Davenport University, at 233-3414 or (866) 248-0012.
