GRAND RAPIDS — Rogers Department Store today announced that Bruce Matza has been named chief operating officer.

The Grand Rapids specialty retailer said that Matza, a retail expert who has served as a consultant to Rogers, has joined the company to assist President Dan Hurwitz in overseeing the day-to-day operations of Michigan’s largest independent retail operation.

Matza also will assist in the launch of Daniel’s, a new and distinctive retail destination developed by the Hurwitz family that will open in Grand Rapids in September.

“Bruce brings invaluable retail experience to his new role as chief operating officer for Rogers,” said Hurwitz. “He has also been instrumental in shaping our customer satisfaction and human development programs over the past year. His expertise in these areas is unparalleled in the region, and we are pleased that he has accepted this new challenge.

“Having Bruce in this post will allow me to concentrate on developing strategic growth initiatives and help grow the strong customer base we already enjoy in West Michigan and beyond. It will also allow me to devote additional time to Daniel’s and to Terrazzo, our new retail center on East Paris Avenue.”

Matza is a native of Florida who has spent 15 years in West Michigan. He is president of Innovations in Management, a Grand Rapids firm that specializes in strategic planning, human resources, customer satisfaction and organizational development for companies of all sizes. Prior to launching Innovations in Management, Matza was a senior executive with Gantos stores.

Matza has also served as a senior executive with Neiman Marcus, where he assisted in the opening of a dozen stores around the country before moving to Illinois where he managed the Northbrook-Chicago store. He has also developed and conducted programs for Harrods Ltd. of London, the National Retail Federation, Lord & Taylor stores and others.

“Rogers Department Store is Grand Rapids,” Matza said. “Most West Michigan residents who have lived here for any length of time have a favorite story about the store, founders Hy and Greta Berkowitz or a special member of the staff who is credited for a fabulous shopping experience. I look forward to joining the team at Rogers and to build on the wonderful traditions that have made the store a retail institution.”
