GRAND RAPIDS — Trash is a sticky issue for Michigan lawmakers.

Since Jan. 1, more than 25 bills or resolutions have been introduced in the Michigan Legislature that would regulate the flow of waste from other states and Canada into Michigan landfills.

A public hearing on out-of-state trash issues is set for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, in the media center at Meads Mills Middle School, 16700 Franklin Road, in Northville.

The event is being hosted by the Senate Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Committee, of which Sen. Patricia Birkholz, R-Saugatuck, is chair. The House Land Use and Environment Committee also is participating.

The joint hearings are intended to take testimony from residents and interested parties on the legislation, and to hear other ideas on how to address the issue.
