GRAND RAPIDS — Due to the collapse of an abandoned sanitary sewer line, Ionia Avenue from Michigan Street to Lyon Street will be closed to all but one lane of traffic for approximately one week beginning Monday, Sept. 8.

The repair work is scheduled to be completed by the end of that week.

A sinkhole has appeared in the center of Ionia Avenue resulting from the collapse of an abandoned 15-inch sanitary sewer line. Repairs will include replacing an old brick manhole and placing flowable fill in 100 inches of abandoned sewer pipe.

As a result of having to excavate to a 14-inch depth on Ionia, only one lane will be open for traffic and some parking spaces will be restricted in the vicinity of construction.

During the time of construction, The Rapid bus terminal, which is located just south of the repair area, will continue to operate as normal during repairs. In order to avoid severe traffic congestion and back-ups on Ionia and adjoining feeder streets, it is recommended that those using Ionia as a through route seek alternate routes during the workday.
