MUSKEGON — Only in Michigan would the July Muskegon Air Fair have snowbirds as one of its featured performances.

But they’re not just any snowbirds. These are the Canadian Snowbirds, the elite jet demonstration team of the Canadian Armed Forces, which has announced that it has selected the Muskegon Air Fair as one of its 2004 performance sites on July 3 and 4.

Known officially as the 431st Air Demonstration Squadron, the famed Snowbirds fly an impressive formation of nine CT-114 Tutor aircraft, making them the largest jet demonstration team in North America.

This will be the first time the Snowbirds have appeared at the Muskegon Air Fair and the first international jet team for the show; it is also the only U.S. site at which the Snowbirds will be performing during the peak summer season.

“We are thrilled

the Snowbirds have selected Muskegon,” said Rich Robinson, show chairman. “We will have a famous international jet team in our community on the most popular weekend of the summer. What a great tourism boost for Muskegon and West Michigan.”

The aerobatic box, or clear zone, for the Snowbirds has different Federal Aviation Administration approved dimensions than the Blue Angels. As a result, the residential properties on Peninsula Drive and south of Ellis Road, including First General Credit Union, will not have to be evacuated.

Most business properties north of Ellis Road and the Ross Park area will continue to require a vacate during the jet team demonstration. The airline terminal building is not affected and will remain open during the entire show.

Next year’s show will mark the 21st year for the Muskegon Air Fair. In addition to the Snowbirds and other flying and static aircraft displays on Saturday and Sunday, the show is planning its traditional Friday Night Preflight Party on July 2. The party has been part of the Air Fair for 15 years and a popular local attraction.
