Fourteen years ago, the Business Journal asked, “Who Owns Downtown Grand Rapids?”

GRAND RAPIDS — The city is constantly changing. New developers arrive, long-timers thrive, and others just look to survive in an economic downturn.

Then, as now, many familiar names dotted the tax rolls representing some of downtown’s venerable addresses. Much has stayed the same, but much has changed, too.

The Amway Hotel Corp. still owns a good chunk of real estate downtown. Gone, however, are Michigan National Bank and Old Kent Bank. In their places, new owners have arrived.

With help from the Kent County Clerk’s Office and the Kent County Register of Deeds, what follows here is a listing of the core downtown properties, deedholders and the state equalized valuation.
