Cole's Names New President
GRAND RAPIDS — Cole’s Quality Foods Inc. on Monday named a local executive as its new president.
John Sommavilla comes to Cole’s from Spartan Stores Inc., where he served as executive vice president of the supply chain since November 2001.
W. Scott Devon, Cole’s current president, will retain his title as CEO and add a new role as chairman of the board. Devon has served as president since 1992.
“We are so fortunate to welcome someone of John’s caliber and background to the Cole’s team,” said Devon. “He’s been with Spartan Stores for more than 19 years, serving in a number of leadership roles from warehouse supervisor to the company’s top tier of executives. He’s a committed, knowledgeable and visionary leader. We’re glad to have him.”
Sommavilla said he is looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities Cole’s will bring him.
“I’m excited about being part of the Cole’s team, especially as the company continues to lead the frozen bread industry in new product development. Cole’s is an established, West Michigan-based company with a clear record of quality and innovation,” said Sommavilla. “Looking at where Cole’s has been and where it is headed, I knew I had to be a part of it.”
As president, Sommavilla will be charged with planning, developing and implementing company policy and goals, as well as overseeing new product development and marketing.
Sommavilla earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing/management from Central Michigan University. He and his wife, Kristie, have three children.
Founded in 1943, Cole’s Quality Foods is a privately held, Michigan-based company with more than $50 million in annual revenue. The company’s product line includes a variety of garlic breads, garlic toasts and garlic bread sticks. The company employs more than 150 people in Muskegon and Grand Rapids.
