GRAND RAPIDS — The Grand Rapids Griffins revealed recently that the American Hockey League franchise raised $270,623 for various charitable causes last season. Over the past two seasons, the team has produced $570,038 for area charities.

The Griffins Youth Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the American Cancer Society, St. John’s Home, Mel Trotter Ministries, and DeVos Children’s Hospital were some of the beneficiaries of those dollars.

Standard Federal Bank and Chemical Bank were two of the local businesses that partnered with the Griffins in raising the dollars.

The Griffins Youth Foundation Golf Classic and the Detroit Red Wings’ Red and White Game were the leading fundraising events last year, worth a respective $73,000 and $55,000 to the total.

But with a work stoppage threatening to cancel at least a part of the upcoming National Hockey League season, the Griffins may not have the Red Wings’ preseason intra-squad game at Van Andel Arena as a charitable event this year.

Centre ICE, the Traverse City facility where the Red Wings hold their training camp, revealed “a September training camp looks unlikely this year.” Detroit closes its camp with the Red-White game at the arena.

The team will also have to compensate season-ticket holders and buyers of mini-plans if the Griffins have that game erased from its schedule.

The franchise will hold its golf classic, dinner, and auction at the Railside Golf Club in Byron Center on Monday, Aug. 23. Call the foundation at 451-9708 for more information.
