GRAND RAPIDS — Spectrum Health’s naming of its new $137 million heart hospital after Fred and Lena Meijer recognizes the couple’s role as lead donors to a capital campaign that raised nearly $33 million for the project.

The heart center campaign netted more than 3,000 individual donations ranging from $5 to millions of dollars for the largest fund-raising effort Spectrum Health has ever mounted.

The building was named after the Meijers for their “unfailing support of Spectrum Health and our community,” Spectrum Health announced last week.

“Fred and Lena Meijer have demonstrated their dedication to West Michigan and the health of its citizens,” Spectrum Health President and CEO Rick Breon said. “They’re two of West Michigan’s leading philanthropists with a commitment to making their community a better place to live for all of us.”

The name “The Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center” was unveiled during a ceremony last week at Spectrum Health’s Butterworth Campus in downtown Grand Rapids. Under construction since 2001, the 330,000-square-foot cardiac hospital is scheduled to open this fall.

“I’ve often raised the issue of why not be the best we can be and why not have the best in the world for the people of West Michigan. Lena and I are honored to be part of this center that underscores that view,” Fred Meijer said. “This center will play a significant role in healing and saving lives in West Michigan. It’s also given us great satisfaction to see that thousands of people donated to make the dream of this heart center a reality. We’re truly fortunate to be part of such a legacy.”

The gift from the Meijers to the heart center is in addition to their support for Spectrum Health’s planned outpatient cancer center, which was named by them in honor of three friends, Harvey Lemmen and Earl and Donna Holton. Earl Holton is the former president of Walker-based retailer Meijer Inc.

Spectrum Health will name the facility the Lemmen-Holton Outpatient Cancer Center.
