GRAND RAPIDS — After six months of negotiations, Pioneer Construction Co. President Tim Schowalter has finalized the purchase of the company with his wife, Barbie, from T.E. Beckering Enterprises President and CEO Tom Beckering.

Schowalter has been with the company for 10 years and has been president since 2003.

The existing management team will stay in place.

“The employees of Pioneer are excited and embracing the future,” Schowalter said. “We’re certainly excited about the opportunity in West Michigan. We see opportunity to grow as a company and have been expanding in other areas.”

With 250 employees, Pioneer is the region’s largest general contractor and is one of the largest such firms in the nation.

The core company of T.E. Beckering Enterprises, it was founded by Earl Beckering Sr. in 1933 and had been held by the family for 82 years.

In recent years, T.E. Beckering Enterprises has expanded into more than 20 separate commercial entities, including American Seating Park and The Boardwalk residential complex.
