The firm of Parmenter O’Toole has a new home in downtown Muskegon, this time with a view.

Chris Kelly, attorney and member of the firm’s board of directors, said the new building is an example of the firm’s dedication to the area and to the city, which it represents legally. The new location,

601 Terrace St.
, is in the downtown Muskegon Lakeshore SmartZone Edison Landing and overlooks both MuskegonLake and the cityscape.

One of the main design components of the new building is the privacy that it gives the attorneys, Kelly said. There is a public area for meeting with guests and clients that is separate from the area that attorneys and staff can use to work on confidential material.

The former location,

175 W. Apple Ave.
, was about 9,000 square feet with another 2,000 square feet in a modular site on the property, while the new location boasts about 16,000 square feet.

“This is quite a bit more efficient,” said Mike Rolf, attorney for Parmenter O’Toole.

Planning for the new location has taken place over the past five to seven years, Rolf said.

“It’s been a long haul, but it’s worth it,” he said.

While the firm has grown since its creation in 1992 from about 10 partners to 23 partners and associates as well as summer clerks, Kelly said more growth is not in the future.

“We wanted to maintain a certain level of attorneys in those areas,” he said. “I don’t see us being much bigger than 25, ever.”

The firm specializes in business real estate, estate planning and probate, municipal representation and commercial litigation.

“This is, I think, a good size for the geographic area we serve,” Rolf said.

Kelly and Rolf said they are pleased that the firm is a part of the revitalization of downtown Muskegon. Kelly said he hopes more businesses will locate or relocate in the area and is impressed with the amount of construction taking place.

“You can’t go a mile without seeing a construction site,” he said.

The firm will have an open house on July 20 to celebrate the opening of the new building.     LQX
