Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt & Howlett LLP is adding another tool to its repertoire.

The Grand Rapids-based law firm is adding seven tax attorneys and two non-attorney tax specialists from the Southfield-based Raymond & Prokop PC, which is known for its tax and business law focus, to its Novi office.

“They have a regionally known tax practice both in tax planning and tax controversy areas,” said Managing Partner Michael Wooldridge.

Wooldridge said Raymond & Prokop has a statewide and regional reputation, which he is excited to add to the Varnum practice.

“This allows us to provide additional and expanded services to our clients,” he said.

Wooldridge said the decision was partially made because of changes within the IRS and a need for specialized tax services.

“In recent years that IRS has become better funded and more sophisticated in examination, litigation, investigations and enforcement proceedings, targeting mid-sized and large businesses,” he said. “This really allows us an opportunity to consolidate our tax expertise.”

Raymond & Prokop Managing Partner Eric Nemeth, who is one of the attorneys joining Varnum, said his firm’s clients will benefit, as well.

“R&P clients will benefit from Varnum’s broad range of legal services,” he said in a press release. “The addition of the state’s premier tax practice to Varnum’s well-known service offerings creates a uniquely powerful combination.”

The addition also increases the Grand Rapids firm’s presence on the east side of the state, where many clients have offices.

The attorneys and tax specialists are planning to move into the Varnum Novi offices at 39500 High Pointe Blvd. within the next few weeks.     LQX
