GRAND RAPIDS — Phil McCorkle is moving up, but not moving on — at least not yet.

The president and CEO of Saint Mary's Health Care recently accepted a position as West Michigan Regional Market Executive for parent organization Trinity Health. He will oversee collaborative programs between Trinity hospitals, including Saint Mary's, Mercy General Health Partners in Muskegon, Battle Creek Health System and two Mercy hospitals, one in Cadillac and one in Grayling.

McCorkle's new role will "generate region-wide initiatives that strengthen market presence and performance of Trinity Health hospitals in Michigan, (addressing) cancer care, coordination of marketing efforts, advocacy, and development of shared services opportunities," according to a release from Novi-based Trinity.

"These are important new roles to support our efforts in all of our hospitals in Michigan," said Mike Slubowski, president of hospital and health networks for Trinity Health, referring to the creation of McCorkle's position and a similar one for the east side of the state. "Phil has demonstrated his leadership through the success of Saint Mary's by enhancing and expanding its clinical programs and community benefit activities."

McCorkle will not leave his role as Saint Mary's president and CEO; he will simply add the new responsibilities to his current workload.

However, the organization has previously acknowledged its succession plans relating to the eventual departure of the 61-year-old McCorkle. In a February interview with the Business Journal, Vice President of Development Micki Benz said that Saint Mary's would soon begin "an organized search for a permanent COO with an eye toward Phil McCorkle's successor."

Interim COO Keith Poisson has been serving in that role since February.
