Two Rise From The Ashes
GRAND RAPIDS — Two Alger Heights businesses will reopen this week, eight months after a devastating fire forced both to close.
Alger Hardware at 2408 Eastern Ave. SE and Sundaes in the Heights at 2404 Eastern Ave. SE will open their doors Saturday morning, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the event at 11 a.m. A September fire gutted Alger Hardware, while severe smoke damage closed Sundaes.
“We are very eager to open our doors,” said Barb Bush, owner of Sundaes in the Heights. “We cannot give enough thanks for the support the community has shown us. We are also thankful for the Grand Rapids Fire Department, who worked endless hours to prevent this fire from spreading.”
Bill DeJong, co-owner of Alger Hardware, echoed those sentiments.
Both businesses are located on the southeast corner of Alger Street and Eastern Avenue. Gathering Grounds Coffee Shop, which occupies the rear portion of the Sundaes building, reopened about three months ago.
