HPC Honors Eight
GRAND RAPIDS — The city’s Historic Preservation Commission paid tribute to individuals and groups last week with its 2007 awards.
Jaime Malone and Erin Gravelyn were named as outstanding historic preservation volunteers, while Patrick McIlhargey and Team Restoration were cited for outstanding historic preservation projects by individuals. McIlhargey restored 356 Eureka Ave. SE; Team Restoration did the same to 456 and 450 Union Ave. SE.
The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan and Ed DeVries Properties Inc. won the outstanding historic preservation awards for a group. The Hispanic Center renovated an old firehouse at 1204 Grandville Ave. SE into its headquarters. DeVries Properties turned the once unwanted water filtration plant at 1430 Monroe Ave. NW into Clearwater Place, a successful commercial building.
The HPC gave Douglas J. Aveda Institute and Ledyard LLC its outstanding commercial project award. The Aveda Institute renovated the old Postal Annex at 138 Commerce SW for its cosmetology school and salon. Ledyard LLC restored the Ledyard Building at 125 Ottawa Ave. NW to its original standards.
The 2007 awards marked the 13th consecutive year the HPC has honored top local preservation efforts.
