LANSING — Michigan's tourism Web site set a new record for traffic in July, with 1.7 million visits for the month, or an average of 55,000 visits daily. Since April, the michigan.org Web site has also ranked first among all state tourism Web sites for the most traffic, which the Michigan Economic Development Corp. attributes to the launch of the Pure Michigan advertising campaign this spring.
"Our new Pure Michigan marketing effort is driving a record number of potential visitors to michigan.org," said George Zimmermann, vice president of the MEDC's Travel Michigan division. "We know from independent research that 65 percent of consumers who use michigan.org for tourism information then travel to and within Michigan. More Web traffic means more business at Michigan destinations."
Web surfers clicked on michigan.org 7.5 million times during the month of July, compared with 6.1 million times during the same month last year, according to Hitwise, an international company that tracks traffic to major Web sites. Michigan.org has been among the top three state tourism Web sites since the beginning of the year, Hitwise records show.
The MEDC estimates that visitors spend $17.5 billion annually traveling in Michigan, which generates $971 million in state taxes every year and accounts for 193,000 jobs in the state's tourism industry.
