GRAND RAPIDS — Birgit Klohs, president of The Right Place Inc., has been named the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce 2007 ATHENA Award recipient. The ATHENA Award honors an individual who has demonstrated leadership, mentored and opened doors of opportunities for women, and contributed time and talent to the community. This is the 18th year the award has been given to a member of the greater Grand Rapids community.

Klohs will be honored at a luncheon on Sept. 25 at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. The ATHENA Award Celebration begins at 11:30 a.m., and will feature a keynote address from author, leadership expert and Michigan’s First Gentleman Dan Mulhern.

Twenty-one women were nominated for the award this year. All will be honored at a private reception prior to the Celebration event, as well as recognized at the luncheon.

Another component of the ATHENA Award celebration is the awarding of scholarships to four women over the age of 30 who are pursuing a higher education. Grand Rapids is the first ATHENA program in the country to establish a scholarship program. This year’s recipients are:

  • Mary Adams Power, Grand Rapids Community College

  • Betty Mullet, Calvin College

  • Norma Esponoza-Aguilar, Grand Valley State University

  • Kimberly Lavender, Grand Valley State University.
