Jobless Figures Vary

LANSING — July seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates increased over the month in 14 of Michigan’s 17 major labor market areas, according to the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth. The unemployment rate for the state was at 7.9 percent; Kent County came in at 6.6 percent.

Since July 2006, the Lansing-East Lansing MSA showed a slight increase in payroll jobs, while the Grand Rapids-Wyoming and Kalamazoo-Portage MSAs displayed larger gains of 4,000 and 1,000, respectively.
