Spartan's Eidson Named President
BYRON TOWNSHIP — Spartan Stores Inc. COO Dennis Eidson is being named president and appointed to the board of directors, the company announced Friday.
Craig C. Sturken, who had been president, retains his duties as chairman and CEO.
“Dennis has been instrumental in developing and implementing many of the critical marketing, merchandising and category management practices that initially stabilized our business and have since led to a consistent record of revenue and earning growth,” Sturken said in a press release.
“The changes will allow me to focus more effort on the most important long-term strategic growth aspects of our business plan and less on the daily operations execution.”
Derek Jones, executive vice president for supply chain, will now report to Eidson and Tom Berg, vice president for business development, will report to Jones. Jones and Berg previously reported to Sturken. Eidson will continue to oversee executives for retail operations, merchandising, marketing and retail services.
Eidson joined Spartan, a grocery retailer and distributor, in 2003 as executive vice president of marketing and merchandising. In Feburary, he was appointed COO, a title he retains. A Michigan State University graduate, he previously was divisional president and CEO of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company’s Midwest region and assistant general manager for Nash Finch’s Michigan operations.
Spartan is the nation’s 10th largest grocery distributor and owns and operates 102 supermarkets and discount food and drug stores.
The changes are effective Monday.
