CASCADE TOWNSHIP — Meijer Inc. last week threw open the doors on its flagship store, a re-tooled version at 28th Street SE and Int. 96, featuring a set of upscale products and services.

Company spokesperson Stacie Behler said customer reaction to Meijer at Cascade was strong. “We did the work there because we heard from customers about the need to provide new options.”

Among the store’s offerings: a cheese shop with artisan and farmstead cheeses, including one from Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor; extensive beer and wine selections and a full-time wine steward; organic baby foods; fresh herbs and locally grown fruits and vegetables; a coffee and tea department with more organic and fair trade products; a 24-foot patisserie; and a book department with a seating area.

Behler said after review, some of the new features may be migrated to some of Meijer’s 180 other stores.

“Meijer at Cascade’s unique shopping platform, featuring wide aisles and ‘stores within stores’ layout, allows us to provide products and shopping services that reflect the changing diversity of the entire region,” said Hank Meijer, CEO and co-chairman.
