Two years after opening its doors, the Wolverine World World Wide Family YMCA will undergo a $2 million, 14,000-square-foot expansion, with ground-breaking set for this fall.

Lead gifts to support the project have come from the James Balk Family and the Wolverine World Wide Foundation. The YMCA has secured $900,000 of the $2 million needed for the expansion.

The additional space will allow the YMCA to offer a wider variety of programs. The expansion features include:

  • Ten family locker rooms

  • James Balk Family Wellness Center

  • Expanded Kid Zone

  • Fit Zone — children’s fitness center

  • Youth and family gymnasium

  • Climbing center

  • Cycling studio

  • Community/multi-purpose room.

“Northern Kent County families and teens have embraced the newly built Wolverine World Wide Family YMCA with such enthusiasm that Wolverine World Wide is glad to lend support to this important expansion as a next step to an even greater YMCA facility,” said Wolverine World Wide CEO Blake Krueger.

Completed in 2005, the 46,800-square-foot is YMCA located on 18 acres at the corner of Post Road and Jupiter Drive in Belmont. Less than two years after opening, the YMCA at that site had 9,605 members, nearly three times the number projected. CQX
