State's Tourism Web Site Receives The Most Hits

LANSING — Michigan's tourism Web site — michigan.org — is the most popular state tourism Web site in America for 2007. According to Hitwise, an online measurement company, the site received a larger percentage of U.S. visits than any other state tourism Web site in 2007. Among a custom category of the 50 U.S. state tourism Web sites, michigan.org averaged 8.68 percent of market share of U.S. visits for 2007.

"Our new Pure Michigan marketing effort is driving a record number of potential visitors to michigan.org," said George Zimmermann, vice president of Travel Michigan.

Web surfers turned to the site 12,757,236 times during 2007, an increase of 22.8 percent over 2006. Consumers used the site an average of 34,951 times a day in 2007. Click-throughs to Michigan tourism industry Web sites also set a new record, averaging 15,792 per day.

"We view this as a clear and important signal that people are looking to Michigan for their leisure travel," commented Zimmermann.

"We know from independent research that 65 percent of consumers who use michigan.org for tourism information, then travel to and within Michigan. More Web traffic means more business.”
