SME Involved In Ford Airport Project

The Grand Rapids office of Soil and Materials Engineers Inc. was awarded a contract to provide construction materials for the $118 million terminal and parking improvement project at Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

The project includes construction of a four-story, 4,900 space parking ramp and related terminal improvements that will feature pedestrian sky bridges connecting the parking ramp to the terminal, a covered roadway canopy for passenger drop-offs, and new utilities and roadway infrastructure. The project is slated to be complete in the fall of 2009.

SME is working with Gresham Smith and Partners, the architect of record, and the Kent County Aeronautics Board representative on site during the construction phase. SME is providing construction materials services related to foundations, reinforcing steel, concrete, density, proofrolls and structural steel for the project, which will be constructed by The Christman Co.

Previously, SME conducted a geotechnical engineering evaluation and provided recommendations for soil and groundwater conditions, site seismic class, site preparation and earthwork, foundations, pavement design and construction considerations.
