Amphitheater Findings Coming
GRAND RAPIDS — Convention and Arena Authority Chairman Steven Heacock will reveal the results of a site selection study for a proposed outdoor music amphitheater on Wednesday, a venue potentially targeted for 40 acres in Millennium Park.
The study, which was commissioned in 2006, was conducted by Chris Falhman, general manager of the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Progressive AE of Grand Rapids. The cost of the effort wasn’t to exceed $50,000 and SMG, the firm that manages DeVos Place and Van Andel Arena for the CAA, is picking up that tab.
Heacock wanted the study done to determine what effect amphitheater traffic would have on the area, which is just west of the John Ball Park neighborhood. Kent County would lease the land to the CAA should the project go forward in Millennium Park.
In addition to the study’s findings, Heacock will also discuss the board’s financial health and its efforts to make the convention center and arena “greener.” Those topics are part of his annual address concerning the state of the CAA.
