GRAND RAPIDS — Meijer Stores today introduced its own brand of prepaid wireless phones and phone cards, which are being made available through a partnership with Texas-based Fusion Mobile. Meijer is currently the only major retailer with its own brand of prepaid wireless options.

Meijer Mobil products are now available at all 181 Meijer stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky.

Rob Shadowens, electronics merchandising manager for Meijer, said the Fusion Mobile partnership represents a “big step forward” for Meijer’s electronics department.

“Our partnership with Fusion Mobile allows us to marry the highest value in prepaid wireless with the high levels of service Meijer customer have come to expect,” Shadowens said. “It’s a real win for those customers who rely on prepaid wireless offerings as their cell provider of choice.”

Like other prepaid wireless services, Meijer Mobil prepaid plans feature benefits such as no credit checks, no long-term contracts to sign and no hidden fees. The Meijer brand prepaid plan will also come with some freebies,  including unlimited nights and weekend minutes, domestic long distance, text messaging, voicemail, caller ID, three-way calling and the ability for customers to keep their unused minutes, according to Meijer.

Essentially, Shadowens said, every checkout lane at Meijer can be viewed as “a wireless phone store without the long waits for service.”
