WALKER — State and local government officials and representatives of The Right Place Inc. will gather today at Avastar Park to celebrate $15 million in investments and 200 new jobs at the former Lear Corp. plant on Alpine Avenue that closed in 2005.

Over the past two years, the 750,000-square-foot space has been renovated by Alpinist Endeavors LLC, led by Jack Buchanan Sr., and is now fully occupied by three companies in what Buchanan describes as "industrial condos." Buchanan said development continues at the 41-acre site, which was declared a 15-year tax-free Renaissance Zone in 2006.

Avastar Park is the cornerstone project of GrandWalk, a 1,200-acre land re-use project involving the cities of Walker and Grand Rapids.

Today’s event will emphasize the potential of Renaissance Zones and brownfield projects to revitalize local economies.

"We'll probably have 500 to 1,000 employees out there," said Buchanan.
