Meat Processor Adds On
BYRON CENTER — Byron Center Meats is investing $2.5 million into a 13,000-square-foot expansion of its plant and retail outlet. The project ultimately will triple the retail space the company currently has at 8360 Harlow Ave. SW.
“We will bring in more employees and more retail offerings. We are looking forward to adding dairy and grocery items to retail along with our sought-after meats, fish and poultry,” said owner Jim Sytsma.
Byron Center Meats is well known for its custom-meat processing and is a major supplier to Sysco Food Service. Gerald and Gert Sytsma started the business in 1946. Today, the firm is operated by Jim Sytsma and his sons, Steve and Doug.
A little over a year ago, a fire destroyed portions of the manufacturing plant and retail outlet.
“I remember wondering when and how we could re-open. Then the phone calls came in from friends, co-workers and partners, and within one day we were back in operation. Our community is amazing and without their support, we’d be in a different position than we are today,” said Jim Sytsma.
Construction on the new addition is under way.
