Council Chooses Helmholdt
GRAND RAPIDS — Members of the Grand Valley Metro Council unanimously selected John Helmholdt last week as the planning agency’s fourth at-large member.
Helmholdt is the communications director for the Grand Rapids Public Schools system and the son of former Grand Rapids Mayor Gerald Helmholdt. The other finalists for the board position were Metro Health President and CEO Michael Faas and Rockford School District Superintendent Michael Schibler.
“I think we were blessed with some excellent candidates,” said Jim Buck, GVMC chairman and Grandville mayor.
The council was allowed to add a fourth at-large member when its total membership reached 35 with the addition of Lowell and Belding earlier this year. Helmholdt will begin his two-year term on the board in October.
