Fifth Third Bank Western Michigan is cutting 46 positions in the West Michigan region. Local Fifth Third spokeswoman Jennifer Ranville said there are 58 positions available within the bank’s West Michigan market that those employees can apply for if they wish. No executive positions are among those on the chopping block.

Tim Lyman, Fifth Third marketing director for West Michigan, said positions have been eliminated across the board, from retail operations to corporate headquarters. He said employees were notified today of the job eliminations and that the cuts will take place over the next week or two.

“We always look at our efficiencies and how we can better serve our customers, so that was the reason behind it,” Lyman said. “As we go through this very tough economy we have to make some very tough decisions. We feel good that we still have 50-plus openings in West Michigan, and, hopefully, some of those people will be able to fill those roles.”

Lyman said he could not comment on other geographical markets Fifth Third serves and whether or not jobs were being eliminated elsewhere across the bank’s footprint.
