Trendway finds ways to advance
HOLLAND — In an industry riddled with layoffs and cutbacks Trendway Corp., a Holland-based office furniture manufacturer, has seen gains.
Trendway, which pursued an image makeover last year by adding the more-than symbol to its name, has experienced a growth in sales for the past two years, while the industry as a whole has slumped by two percent, according to the Business and Institutional Furniture Association.
“Our 2008 shipments are up more than eight percent over 2007,” said Bill Bundy, Trendway’s president and CEO. “For two consecutive years now we have outperformed the industry’s reported growth rate. This year’s September and October orders were the highest monthly totals in our 40-year history.”
Experts in the office furniture industry have been saying that during a down market, companies that are small and have a niche would most likely be the most successful. Trendway falls in between a tier two and tier three company under the Herman Miller Inc., Steelcase Inc., and Haworth Inc. level and has strengthened its reach into federal government business. Its niche, however, is less about a particular industry, but more on how it serves its clients.
“Trendway is a very well run organization,” said Brian Bascom, owner of Velocity Partners, which focuses on helping companies find and realize new customer, market and product opportunities. “It fills an interesting niche in the market form the standpoint of value priced furniture, reasonable design and fast service. The market place for a long period of time has known them for service; meaning being able to turn orders around quickly and be able to handle a lot of custom fabrics, custom sizes, custom tops.”
The company, whose motto is “On time or on Trendway,” said much of its success is a result of its customer service.
“We attribute it directly to our service model,” explained Bundy. “These are challenging times, to say the least, but there is still a need for office furnishings. Products that provide workplace solutions are important, and customers are even keener to find value and reliable relationships when they choose suppliers. We deliver quality product quickly, completely, and on time, as promised.”
