The Right Place Inc. has received a national Corporate Investment & Community Impact Award from Trade & Industry Development Magazine in recognition of its success in attracting life science researcher, Sequenom Inc., to Grand Rapids.

Last September, Sequenom opened a second research location when it purchased lab space in Grand Rapids along the Medical Mile. The company invested $20.25 million in the project to expand its prenatal diagnostic testing technology, an investment that’s expected to create up to 523 jobs by 2013 in West Michigan. The Right Place worked with Sequenom, as well as the city of Grand Rapids and the Michigan Economic Development Corp. to develop an incentive package valued at $20 million over 12 years.

“This is a very significant win on several levels for both The Right Place, and more importantly West Michigan,” said Birgit Klohs, president and CEO of The Right Place. “It demonstrates that West Michigan’s growing life science sector has gained the attention of the bio-science community.  And there is even more potential in the future.”

San Diego-based Sequenom is a genetics and molecular diagnostic company providing genetic analysis products and services as well as diagnostic tests that address prenatal genetic disorders, oncology and infectious diseases. The Grand Rapids facility is being used to further develop the company’s non-invasive prenatal tests, which provide new abilities to test for genetic disorders as early as the first trimester of pregnancy.
