LumenFlow stands out in NASA contest

LumenFlow of Middleville received honorable mention in NASA’s Create the Future Design Contest and was also distinguished as the only Michigan-based company to place in the competition.

LumenFlow is a photonics design, development and manufacturing company that researches the emission, transmission, amplification, detection and modulation of light. The company received honorable mention in the Machinery, Equipment and Component Technology contest category for its patent pending 360 Degree View Imaging Device, which gives users a single continuous 360 degree view of the interior of any cylindrical surface using a proprietary optical element. The device incorporates a ring of LEDs that illuminate the surface of a cylindrical component or product so it can be inspected for structural flaws, part to part interfaces or other key features, thereby reducing the failure rate of a component. Machinery, Equipment and Component Technology contest category includes products that speed and improve work, manufacturing, or scientific research processes, according to NASA.

“We pride ourselves on the development of leading-edge technologies that provide solutions across a variety of photonic applications,” said Harold Brunt, LumenFlow partner. “The recognition of our 360 Degree View Imaging Device validates the work we do here at LumenFlow. The products we develop improve on existing technologies and fit a multitude of industries, while reducing cost and inefficiency.”

The publishers of NASA Tech Briefs magazine started the competition in 2002 as a way to encourage innovation in product design among engineers, entrepreneurs and students around the world. In addition to the Machinery, Equipment and Component Technology category, the contest includes Consumer Product, Medical Products, Safety and Security, Sustainable Technologies and Transportation categories. The contest typically attracts more than 1,000 entries worldwide each year.

Winners were highlighted in an April supplemental issue of NASA Tech Briefs magazine.
