Kent County commissioners will likely approve the sale of the county’s recycling center this week.

The county’s Department of Public Works has owned the facility at 322 Bartlett St. SW, just east of Market Avenue, since 1994. The Interurban Transit Partnership will purchase the site for $960,000, the appraised price of the property. ITP already owns land adjacent to the downtown recycling center.

DPW will be moving its recycling operation to its new facility being built on Wealthy Street SW, a center that is expected to be in full operation by Sept. 1, 2010. Until then, ITP will lease the Bartlett site back to the DPW for $1 a month so the department can continue its recycling business.

The Finance Committee approved the transaction last week.

“I’m so impressed and pleased with the work of the DPW and the county,” said Jim Talen, county commissioner. “This is another piece in which the county and ITP has worked together.”
