Gentex Corp. has announced it is shipping its auto-dimming rearview mirrors with its Rear Camera Display feature for the new Daihatsu Mira Cocoa mini-passenger vehicle in Japan. The Cocoa is in the "Kei" vehicle segment: Japanese small vehicles including cars, vans and pickup trucks that represent about one-third of the automotive market in Japan. It marks the first time that auto-dimming mirrors have been offered in mini-passenger vehicles anywhere in the world.

The Gentex RCD mirror contains a liquid crystal display that works with a video camera mounted on the rear of the vehicle to provide a view directly behind the vehicle. When the vehicle is shifted into reverse, the live scene behind the car appears automatically on the mirror. The video display disappears when the vehicle is shifted out of reverse.

"This is our first program with Daihatsu," said Gentex Senior Vice President Enoch Jen, adding that Gentex management believes the contract is further evidence that automakers see Gentex technologies as cost-effective and efficient ways to enhance safety, comfort and convenience "in all market segments and all vehicle markets."
