Gentex Corp. (NASDAQ: GNTX), the Zeeland -based manufacturer of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and camera-based active-safety systems for the automotive industry, commercial fire protection products and dimmable aircraft windows will ship auto-dimming rearview mirrors with its Rear Camera Display feature as original equipment for the 2011 Subaru Outback sport utility vehicle.

According to a news release, the Outback is the second original equipment program between Gentex and Subaru.

The RCD mirror is also equipped with a compass that utilizes Gentex's proprietary Z-Nav technology, a highly accurate sensor that determines the vehicle's directional heading, and universal garage door opener as part of the Power Moonroof Package. Vehicles equipped with a navigation system feature a Gentex mirror with compass and garage door opener.

The RCD Mirror contains a liquid crystal display that works with a video camera mounted at the rear of the vehicle to provide a view directly behind the vehicle while backing up. When the vehicle is shifted into "reverse," a display appears automatically through the auto-dimming mirror's reflective surface. The display disappears when the vehicle is shifted into any other gear, a capability that is made possible utilizing Gentex's "transflective" coating and lighting techniques.

"For the second time, Gentex is working directly with Subaru engineers to make auto-dimming mirrors with advanced features as original equipment on the vehicle," said Enoch Jen, Gentex senior vice president. "Subaru has long offered Gentex auto-dimming mirrors as an accessory option on its vehicles, but the 2010 Subaru Tribeca, which featured the RCD mirror display, was the first original equipment program between our two companies. Subaru is gaining U.S. market share and we are pleased that Gentex products are being offered to the Subaru-buying public."
