Steelcase has unveiled an online tool for designing simple office spaces in 3D using the Unity gaming platform, which it says “turns small business owners, office managers and home office users into interior designers.”

The users can create and view a simple, customized workspace before investing any money in it, according to the company. A user starts by choosing a room layout, and then dragging and dropping Steelcase or Turnstone furniture into it. The creator can then opt to purchase the drawing.

“For design-novices, the tool removes the barriers that stand in the way of better office design: uncertainty, unknown costs and time,” said Sara Johnson, Steelcase channel development manager.

The designs can also be shared with others via Facebook, Twitter or email.

Steelcase and its Turnstone division also announced a design contest using the online site, with Steelcase office chairs to be awarded each week through October.
