The wooden shoe fits, and a Holland general contractor company is now wearing it.

Elzinga & Volkers, Inc. took home its first victory in front of about 320 members of the West Michigan general contractor community at the third annual Michigan Contractor of the Year awards Thursday evening at the Goei Center in Grand Rapids.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Dan Vos Construction, the 2010 winner and one of last year's honorable mentions, and Pioneer Construction, a first-time finalist. The other 2012 nominees were The Christman Company, Erhardt Construction and Owen-Ames-Kimball, who took home the MCOY award last year.

The MCOY awards, sponsored by the American Subcontractors Association of Michigan, celebrate the best of West Michigan general contractors as selected by subcontractors. The subcontractors vote on the basis of bid ethics, safety, jobsite supervision, communication, schedule coordination, project relations, lien process, administrative procedures, payment terms and quality workmanship.

"This is kind of like the Golden Globes for general contractors," said Tony Roussey, vice president of operations at Elzinga & Volkers. "We're always hopeful, but surprised."

Elzinga & Volkers, a Holland-based company, was a nominee in 2011, but not in 2010, said Roussey, spurring the company on to become the best.

"We weren't even thought of as one of the 10 best. It was a real punch in the gut," Roussey said. "We went to work on it, and we wanted to get better."

A video showing all the nominees played before the winner was announced. Mike Novakoski, president and CEO of Elzinga & Volkers, said in the video the company exudes a high ethical level towards its partners.

"It's not about us; it's about everyone else," Novakoski said. "This is not a one-time shot. We realize that without the trade partners, we're not successful, and we'd never be successful on our own. The culture we've been building, we shouldn't gain and win at the expense of others. We've got this (nomination) to validate we're doing the right thing by our partners."

MCOY was created in 2010. Its first winner was Dan Vos Construction, with Owen-Ames-Kimball and Erhardt Construction earning honorable mentions. Last year, those same three triumphed again, but Owen-Ames-Kimball won and Dan Vos and Erhardt received honorable mentions.
