Grand Rapids Brewing opening on tap
Grand Rapids Brewing Co., 1 Ionia Ave. SW, will open Dec. 5.
The brewery and restaurant was originally slated to open in late summer, but was pushed back because of some logistical issues, according to Mark Sellers, owner of Barfly Ventures LLC, the holding company for GRBC, HopCat, Stella’s Lounge and McFadden's.
“Now we have some certainty,” Sellers said. “I didn’t want to say unless we knew for sure when we could open.”
Sellers said the six weeks will allow the brewers to stockpile enough beer for a full opening. He noted some breweries open with a limited selection or run out of beer quickly.
GRBC will open with eight to 10 beers on tap, including a reincarnation of Silver Foam, a popular pilsner that the original pre-Prohibition GRBC sold across the Midwest. The brewing will be done on a seven-barrel system, purchased from the former owners of GRBC on 28th Street SE, which opened in 1993 and closed in 2011.
The brewery also will be all-organic with a large recycling program, as Barfly establishments shift 90 percent of their waste away from the landfill.
The location, which saw Sellers invest $1.5 million into the renovation of a building built in 1894, will seat 450 customers with a patio facing Van Andel Arena.
The new brewery will pay homage in various ways to the original Grand Rapids Brewing Co., which at its height produced 250,000 barrels a year at a location near the corner of Michigan Street and Ottawa Avenue.
