Lemoine expected to join Metro Council board
Likely appointee would bring 20 years of governmental experience to agency.
Lemoine is all but certain to fill an at-large vacancy that was created when Tom Fehsenfeld, president of Crystal Flash, resigned from the board recently because the timing of the monthly meetings conflicted with his work schedule.
Lemoine has been the director of System Government Affairs for Spectrum Health since 2004 and has served as a liaison with local, state and federal officials for the region’s largest medical organization. He is also a registered lobbyist.
“Over the years, I have always enjoyed working with you on various issues. I have also enjoyed working with many of the local government officials from the communities you represent. Building upon these existing relationships would be exciting not only to contribute to the efforts of GVMC, but to more directly engage on local and regional issues that are critical to West Michigan,” wrote Lemoine in a letter to GVMC Executive Director John Weiss.
Before joining Spectrum Health, Lemoine managed government relations for Meijer Inc. and was vice president of public policy and government affairs at the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.
“Business is the lifeblood of our community. If they are not profitable and thriving, we will all suffer,” said Lemoine when he joined the chamber in 2003. “I am pleased to carry on the chamber’s long tradition of promoting government policies that establish an environment where businesses can succeed.”
Lemoine also chaired the chamber’s public policy committee and was on the steering committee for the organization’s Political Action Committee.
He also has worked as a staff member for former state Senate Majority Leader Dick Posthumus, R-Alto, and former state Senator Dale Shugars, R-Portage. In addition, he was a field director for former Republican Gov. John Engler during his 1998 re-election campaign.
A native of Springfield, Mass., Lemoine lives in Rockford. He earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Calvin College.
GVMC members will vote Thursday on Lemoine’s appointment to the board.
